As said by others prior, I really think this one doesn't belong on the main list. There's nothing that particularly distinguishes this 'memetic agent' from mere foolish paranoia. As it is, it makes me chuckle, and I'd be voting up if it was a -J.

But I'll abstain instead.

The way to solve the issue is so mundane and straightforward. But, right beside it, you see the version covered in black boxes and [REDACTED] and wonder… How in heck do you get cured of it? Death? A wet Willie? 110-Montauk?

I was thinking heavy exposure to Streissand Effect would do the trick

… hm. Not funny enough for a -J, but I don't think the meta itself works as a serious SPC.
I may not be an expert, and still trying to understand memetics and all, but don't those have a 'vector'? A way to transmit themselves?
If that's so, how does this one transmit exactly? Is seeing the censored articles? 'cause in that case, having the previous version there is inviting people to get infected.
Or it just appears outta nowhere on someone with those tasks? 'cause in that case isn't memetic… right?
I think I have to read it again and check before voting.

this isnt funny enough to be a -J. and while it's meta, it does stand well just on its own.

the only real objection to this i feel is that, in a way, it is an attempt at moving toward "canon", by granting legitimacy to those articles where people expunged information inappropriately, giving an "in character" explanation for that phenomenon.

outside of that, upvoted.

I actually enjoyed this article. It would be perfect as a -J, but I honestly think it's just an excuse to cover for all the articles with overdone redactions, expungements, and those evil, evil black boxes. It's well written, an well executed. It's really the core idea I have to wonder about.

…oh god the title please don't let it be what I think it is please don't let it be it's at +15 so far so surely it can't be what I think it is alright I'm gonna read it now oh god oh god it is exactly what I thought it would be oh well at least it didn't use that stupid thing with another version of the document to redact everything out of itself oh wait there is a collapsible I wonder what's in it oh no oh god oh god WHY?!!

Seriously, through.

A year ago, when the only "meta" (not in traditional, but in described in tag guide sense) articles were The Toaster and The Pope and The Plague and The Bowl, I could've maybe possibly upvoted this. Actually, no, four times is stretching it already.

Now we have The Printer and The Minotaur and I think there were more in 1000+ block.

And, another thing. The "there is this whole different version of scprocedures and description in the collapsible" thing. Zachary did it, and it was mostly alright. Then Bugsy did it, and it was done clumsy in my opinion, but I forgive Bugsy because he is so cute I just want to hug him. Now, I really don't want to see anything else try to do it again. Two times was more than enough, thank you. It is formulaic, predictable, and, once you've seen it one time, really not interesting anymore.

So, back to this article. It have the overdone "meta" thing, overdone "another document" thing, and memetics, which are totally new and interesting.

Also, I knew every word of this article after reading the title. Every damn word. That shouldn't happen, ever.

And maybe I am just bitter because once upon a time every page I've read here held a wonder of new idea, sick, twisted idea that I could've never read anywhere else, and which would never come into my head on its own. And maybe that's just a natural evolution of the site, from few precious gems into the field of glass shards. And if that's the case, I'll go and write a skip about a sphere that liquidizes the bones of everyone in a kilometer radius, because that's a very dangerous thing that should obviously be contained by the Foundation.

They see excessive censorship and go all "Is this memetic how do we contain it oh god". They probably flip their shit over things that later turn out to be completely normal.

I'd consider upvoting it just for the mental image of Sorts the character (memetic specialist as he is) hearing of it and and weeping.

Though honestly, my initial thought on it was "Don't attribute to an SCP what can be attributed to simple human stupidity". It just feels like, as a meta thing, many similar things have been done before.

I love the contrast between the official report and the one affected by 1059. The way to solve the issue is so mundane and straightforward. But, right beside it, you see the version covered in black boxes and [REDACTED] and wonder… How in heck do you get cured of it? Death? A wet Willie? 110-Montauk?

Upvote.

I'd say that signs on bathroom doors are an example of a real memetic compulsion, yeah. The urge to comply is something provided by society itself, not the signs, but that is how this stuff works. You see the signs, you know which room you are supposed to use. If you don't know the meaning of the signs or weren't already taught that sneaking into the ladies' room is against the rules you wouldn't be subject to the compulsion. And how much of a compulsion you actually feel depends on your personality.

edit: no I am not going to write this up no one should write this up! :E

You know what, you're right, this would make a brilliant -J

And… and then D-121iu1o2192i will sneak into the Women's room instead and he will be vivisected to discover how he is immune to the memetic compulsion…

And the author would be using the phrase "memetic compulsion" in an entirely correct sense, assuming that I'm understanding memetics properly THIS TIME AROUND.

…Sorts, you should go and write that up.

It makes me weep. The problem is that this is a straight up real thing that is happening on this wiki everyday. People see the mysterious black boxes and the redacteds all over the site and feel the urge to write their own. This isn't a memetic SCP. This is memetic reality.

I… I hate to say this but I would upvote it if it was -J.

If it's a straight up main list item it just feels like tomorrow the Foundation is going to be containing a set of male/female icons from bathroom doors and doing experiments about how men will always go into the Men's door and women always go into the Women's and never vice versa even if they lead into a functionally identical bathroom. OH MY GOD. And… and then D-121iu1o2192i will sneak into the Women's room instead and he will be vivisected to discover how he is immune to the memetic compulsion…

Somewhere in an underground base, the memetics research department is going over the proposed budget for next year and frowning at its small size. One of the most senior researchers stands up. He is not a man of rank or authority, but he is old, and having survived at the Foundation this long brings a certain amount of respect so the others get quiet and turn to listen.

"I remember when we got assigned to work with stuff that had auras. I remember when we could requisition telekill on command. We once had the authority to blind trained combat personnel and give them guns to point in the general direction of a containment area. Now look at us. They've stripped us of our power, cut our paychecks so much that we can hardly buy apple seeds from that fucking vending machine. Our department is going nowhere fast, boys. At this rate they are going to roll us into the cognitohazard branch and eliminate our research altogether. There's only one thing left to do."

He slams his hands on the table and leans forward, "Contain the most ridiculous, mundane shit possible."

"Oh! Oh! How about dancing?"

"Yes, good. Good start. But think bigger, we must secretly contain secrecy itself."
