Thank you for your feedback, Shanor.
Is there a reason he decided to put this root structure into himself? You say it is to protect his family, but you don't specify what dangers he possesses.
(Some of this details will only be implied.)
The idea I have now is that he had anomalous plant-based abilities.
For some reason, an organization is after him and this has caused trouble not only for him but to his wife and daughter as well. He saw how stressful or chaotic his family's life was because of the constant running away from the organization.
In the end, he decided what he thinks what was best for his family, he left them and so that he could lead the organization away from his family.
He created the root-like structure in his brain to forcefully forget his family so that it wouldn't hurt as much and so that he can focus more on misleading the organization, and also as a safeguard to protect his family's identity just in case he gets caught by the organization.
I was thinking maybe he cannot kill himself because the organization might become interested with his daughter instead who was also anomalous. (Although, I doubt that the organization will not become interested with his daughter if they are evil.)
What do you think?
