Count me as another lurker who finally decided to become a contributing member of society.
I used to be an exceptional writer, until I realized (suddenly and disastrously) that I merely had gracious friends. In retrospect, the whole adventure was as hilarious as it was embarrassing. I now call it the "High School" of my writing scholarship.
Live and learn, right?
I'd like to think I've grown in some good directions since those bad old days. I've since learned to value harsh criticism over faint praise. I've learned that a good product is often just a bad idea with a savvy presentation, and that good ideas won't save bad executions. I also discovered the SCP community, where folks are learning this kind of stuff every day. I imagine that it all sounds old-hat to you folks by now, but … well, everybody's the new guy once.
In any event, I'll be sorting out a sandbox eventually. In the meantime, I'm going to reread some SCPs, poke about in the forums, maybe check out this "chat" stuff, and generally roll around in my new-guy-ness.
