This concept is a bit odd. I've looked to see if anyone's done anything similar before, but so far came across nothing of the kind, so here it goes.
A book (I was thinking something like an ordinary, blank-faced hardback, having about 200 pages or so) what's contents is that of an entire civiliations history, starting from a primeval age on the first page, and leading up to the ascension of the race into becoming technological gods on the last page. What the supernatural aspect of the book is presides in the idea that the crude pencil drawings on each page of the races' life is alive and moving, with animals being born, living, and dying, cars and planes moving about the scene and people going about their everyday lives. All living things on each page appear to be unaware of the fact that they're in a book, not within knowledge or contact of any other pages, and any activity outside of the book.
Each page individually would never show signs of development or progress, though all pages collectively would tell a tale of technological and social evolution in a visual format (I.e. If a war is occurring on, say, page 73, then page 73 will always display a war scene and that war will never end on that page, whereas if you flick on to, say, page 89, the war is over and they are recovering).
I also thought that, possibly, you could draw or doodle something quick down on one of the pages, and the people on that page would instantly recognise it in their environment. For example, on a page we might consider to be a medieval age, you could draw a dragon, and this item would interact with it's environment as you would expect (I.e. The dragon will attack people). What's interesting is that the item drawn, if given the chance to cause enough unease or change, could affect future pages (E.g. The dragon's affects would immediately appear on the next page, and the next, and the next, causing people, say, 100 pages on to be hateful of dragons, or fearing of them), thus changing the course of the civilization's history. You could set off a nuke on page 1 and kill everyone, only to find that the rest of the pages onwards had gone completely blank.
I hope my idea hasn't been done already, and I hope you guys like it! Constructive criticism is very welcome. Thanks!
