This is my first SCP and, at 493 words, my entry for the Short Works Contest. Many thanks to Baby_Boo, minmin, snorlison, Decibelle, Argenti, DolphinSlugchugger, Simulakyo, TyGently, vezaz and all the others who helped me with this (pretty sure I'm forgetting many names here; guys, give me a shout and I'll fix it).
I think I'm rather pleased at the result, although right now I'm probably too much in the afterglow to judge properly. There were all sort of lofty thematic goals: I wanted something like ophite’s Buried Giant with its “everything you know is wrong” moment in the Addendum. I wanted an anti-detective story – there’s the horror of murder, yes, but there’s no making sense of it at the end, no villain apprehended or motive explained…
Whether the execution met the goals? No clue. I might give a stab at rewriting this or that bit once the contest is over, though.
