Great article, Scan. I agree with just about every point,
I would also suggest that critics PM their critique to authors who don't appear to be reading the discussion page.

Thanks to Kalinin, WrongJohnSilver, and the staff's Site Criticism team for their feedback! If you have any suggested additions, deletions, or other alterations, feel free to let me know here.
Also is there some place I should formally announce this?
A nice, plainly-worded essay about how and when to critique. I do feel that some of this information is common sense or stated in other guides, however, and for this reason I am no-voting.
I did write this with low expectations w/r/t how much "common sense" the reader has and how many of the guides they've read. I do consider brevity a virtue, however. Which information do you think is unnecessary?
My favorite part of this is the acknowledgement that giving good critique takes effort, just like writing a good piece of fiction. If you can't be arsed to provide legitimate help to the flailing-but-sincere 16-year-old whose enthusiasm outweighed their better judgment, you have no reason to tear their piece down and make them ragequit the site. If you tell them something useful, they might stew on it and improve as a writer. Maybe it'll take six years, but they didn't just ragequit, so those six years of growing up were worth it, for both them and the community at large.
On the other hand, they might just as likely keep spewing ordure and be a generalized low-key nuisance during the entire site's lifetime (six years is what, 3/4 of the entire wiki's age.) More so in fact, if they're the type inclined to ragequit after being confronted with the harsh reality.
I really hope this can serve as a useful guide for people who struggle to come up with good critique. It's got good pointers and you clearly put a lot of thought into why people might give bad critique and how to help them. Well done, sir. +1
