Ok, so I was wondering if anyone on the site has some sort of rare/unusual condition, such as Synesthesia or Morgellon's Syndrome or An allergy to water or something. I'm not trying to be offensive, I'm just getting curious about the members since I heard someone on a different thread who claimed to have Synesthesia. Just asking is all.
Im autistic. I have a high functioning form of autism. Not THAT rare but whatever.
I see no utility in a thread dedicated to sharing intimate details of one's medical history.
I don't know, I think that since it's voluntary it could provide insight into certain experiences that would otherwise go un-shared. If someone was trying to wright a scip about, say, synesthesia, this thread would be a great opportunity to make sure the condition is approached and described in the correct way.
Eh, I don't really consider this an intimate detail about myself, since hundreds of strangers see me with it each summer, so I'll share:
I actually do have a minor allergy to water.
Specifically cold water. If I go swimming in lakes, pools, the ocean, or take a cold shower, I break out into hives. It started when I was at the beach around 13, and I didn't know what the hell was happening. I thought something was biting or stinging me.
They can get quite large and ugly, but it's cosmetic, they don't itch or anything, and usually go away after a half hour. If it's late in the season and the pools are warm enough (above 85 degrees), I won't break out. I went to this cove in Newburyport, RI, last summer, and I didn't break out for the first time in almost twenty years swimming in the ocean, the water was so warm.
I've never really looked into this, so I don't know how rare a condition it is—for all I know it's pretty common.
Also, I'm left handed.
I actually have a friend who had a very similar thing- it also caused her to develop what she called "leopard spots"; places where she'd develop a patchy tanning pattern after the hives went away. They did eventually figure out what caused it, but I'm not certain on the details.
I have oral fixation, which means I chew on things, like my fingernails or plastic bottlecaps.
Also I yawn every time I hear the pledge of allegiance. Don't know why

I've got that cilantro thing. If I eat cilantro raw or even get a visible leaf in salsa, I get this, like… hyperpowerful wintergreen effect (some people say it tastes like soap, which is close enough to true) that is incredibly unpleasant. Stronger than wasabi, but not at all delicious.
Colon polyps, not that rare.
So because of some… thing happening in my tongue, I basicly can't make the movements necessary to pronounce the letter R. I had a surgery to fix it, but my tongue couldn't get used to it so I still have many problems pronouncing it.
For some reason, tho, it's way easier for me to pronounce it when I speak in english rather than in spanish.
Don't know if this is a condition or not, but I hear music playing in my head practically 24/7 (except when I'm in non-REM sleep).
I'm intolerant to gluten and will get sick in a manner similar to a hangover if I eat anything more contaminated than a Domino's gluten free crust pizza. I've been tested for Celiac and it was negative, but it was a blood test, and the only 100% certain way to get a result is with an endoscopy (blood tests are known to give false positives). It's unlikely I have Celiac, though, or else I'd still get sick with minor contamination on things like Domino's gluten free crust. My aunt has Celiac and my mom is gluten-intolerant like I am, so I guess I should have seen it coming genetically.
That must suck in this day and age, with all the hipsters complaining about gluten. It must really hurt credibility of people that actually have a gluten intolerance.
On the upshot, people cashing in on the craze by making gluten-free everything.

Apart from Communion bread!
I don't really understand the argument behind that… Jesus wasn't gluten free, true, but he wasn't bread coloured and doughy either… Isn't the whole point of transubstantiaton that the bread TRANSFORMS into the body of Christ?
Nope, they make that too.
Both this and Leveritas' comment are super accurate. I have read so many horror stories of waiters and baristas giving people things they're allergic to because they think it's them partaking in hipster fads or whatever rather than having a food allergy. That said, yeah, the upside to people popularizing gluten-free stuff without allergy involved is that it makes a lot of stuff available that just plain wasn't on the market as early as ten years ago.
