As somewhat amusing I find the addendum, I can't see much attraction to this SCP. It doesn't have much of a hook and it's just a little odd and out there. I don't hate it enough to downvote, I don't love it enough to upvote. It… is just there. I feel complete apathy towards the article.
I don't see the attraction either. The subject matter is a bit heavy for me.
I'm a little confused of how the gravity-reaction works: does it draw predators towards it (which is dumb and would probably just squash the gecko) or throw predators in the direction that it is facing?
It changes gravity's direction to that of the gecko. Basically, stuff around it falls at it.
But yeah, my first thought was
this kills the gecko
Unless its predator is exactly in the wrong place, they're more likely to fall past it rather than directly onto it. Also imagine this: A predator frightens the gecko, which runs up a nearby tree in a spiral (as many animals do). Predator falls towards the tree, then gets slingshotted around it and tossed away.
But yes, there is a chance that the gecko might actually be harmed by its anomalous ability. The less here might also be that the universe is inexplicable, and not all adaptations are strictly beneficial.
What would happen if 2 geckos were positioned so they'd have directly opposing gravity fields? Would they just cancel each other out?
Still like the idea though. Upvoted.
Reminds me of "VVVVVV."
Upvoted, because that and Geckos are the coolest things ever.
Also, say one of these things is under your porch, on the "ceiling" of it and is startled by you. Do you get thrown up 8 or so meters?
Yep. Or more accurately, you'd accelerate upwards for 8 meters, continue for a couple more, then turn around and fall back down. Far enough that you'd probably break a leg.
Special containment procedure addendum: no personnel working with SCP-1136 may own or drive a motor vehicle. Neither automotive vehicles nor insurance may be mentioned within 10m of any instance of SCP-1136.
