Hey everyone! This is my third attempt at a SCP article, with the first one never seeing the light of day, so I'd appreciate your thoughts on it! Here's the link Carnival Mask. I have no idea if something like this has been done before, so please let me know! Also grammar is a big problem I seem to have with my articles, so please be very nitpicky!
Yeah, grammar needs some correction.
Why is it kept in a lead safe? Is it radioactive?
I just used lead because it needed a descriptive term. What do you feel I should use instead?
Well, for a safe, I imagine ordinary steel would suffice, considering that this mask doesn't seem capable of escaping on its own. If it has some sort of anomalous effect that might necessitate something more exotic (like lead) then it's another story. That's up to you, of course.
A hallucination-inducing mask that kills people isn't that interesting. The picture is nice, you could do more to it, and perhaps write something about the Venetian Carnivals (I'm pretty sure there are more urban legends surrounding it), but the idea for now isn't too good.
Alrighty guys thanks for the feedback! I'll work on making the idea a bit more groovy over the next couple of days. Venetian Carnival urban legends is an interesting place to look for ideas, so ill begin my hunt with them!
SCP-035 is a pretty well-written mask SCP. Maybe take a look?
That being said, I agree with what has been said so far; the picture looks nice and I'd be interested in reading an article about it, but the idea could use some reworking. Good luck with your urban legends research, and I look forward to your edits!
Hmm, thanks for pointing out the other SCP's, I'll give them more than a quick scan when Ive got some actual free time. I'm having trouble finding any urban legends regarding Venice during the Carnival period. Can anyone suggest anything/provide any links? Or should I try and focus on the stories behind the many masks used during Carnival? Wait, maybe the island, and legends surrounding, Poveglia? Im strapped for time so this is as much for me to look back on and remind myself and what I need to do, so if Im rambling, IM NOT INSANE! At least not clinically. In any case, thoughts!
Actually, I did some simple searching, and I found a few links that might be interesting. There's actually a decent amount of lore in regards to Venetian carnival masks.
This page has some basic information about the types of masks and who wore them.
I particularly like this page, specifically for the passage,
Masked, a servant could be mistaken for a nobleman—or vice versa. State inquisitors and spies could question citizens without fear of their true identity being discovered (and citizens could answer without fear of retribution). The morale of the people was maintained through the use of masks—for with no faces, everyone had voices.
A common theme for (non-anomolous) masks in general is concealment of identity. Perhaps your Venetian mask, when worn in the midst of a crowd, would cause everyone to unquestionably believe the wearer is someone else, despite differences in voice and mannerisms?
Also, something random I came up with, the mask itself could fluctuate between three stages (made discernible by the expression of the mouth): happy (smile), neutral (pictured), and sad (frown). How randomly or often the stages change is up to you, but I was thinking that someone wearing the mask when it's smiling would be treated as someone immensely popular and respected, someone wearing the mask when it's neutral would be treated with suspicion and nervousness, and wearing the mask during its "sad" stage would result in the wearer being attacked or otherwise harmed.
Wow, I've ranted a lot. Hope this helps. Good luck with your SCP!
Edit: Of course, I'm not the most well-read in currently existing SCPs. There's probably a good chance something like this has been done…
