So today somebody posted an idea for 286, which got shot down pretty quickly because of the 'sueishness. However, it sparked an idea for me, and I figured—okay, why not try it, because it's already been pretty soundly rejected; it'd be kind of hard to mess it up even worse, right?
So I played around with it on my own, but I never got permission from the person who wrote the original 286 before it was deleted. I used their basic idea and a name. Other than that, everything is my own writing. But I do not want to plagiarize anything. It's sitting in the sandbox right now, here—

(BTW, I realized belatedly that I'm supposed to name the sandbox page after myself and reuse it. Oops. I'll do that in the future.)
Another problem I see is that this is humanoid and will automatically end up having to match up to a higher standard. On the other hand, I do not want to go over the top with the angst, nor end up too clinical and drown the reader in jargon. It's my first and unlikely to be accepted—but I want to learn as much from it as possible.
Of course, all of that may not be relevant, because I still don't know how much permission I need from the original writer and how different my idea has to be from theirs.
So. Uh. Help?
