This just isn't interesting enough to compete with the ruby amulet. To me it feels like a bad ripoff.
But…you drew the comparison to the ruby amulet yourself…so of course everyone is going to compare them…
Anyway. I'm inclined to agree. The object itself feels way too much like a ruby amulet knockoff, especially with the author-insert character. The wording also feels awkward in places especially under the cut, so I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around the intended effect - tell me if I've got this right: it alters the memory of anyone who finds out its name so that they think they just got news of some impending disaster.
If I'm understanding the effect right, the author-insert researcher is the biggest hobble to the article - I can't think of any logical reason why the Foundation would let Anborough keep working as a researcher instead of just sticking him and the hairband in a cell and banning all outside contact, and the memory alteration effect just isn't interesting enough to hold up the story.
