So, after seeing the reference to Clef and Dmitri in one of Randomini's Insufficient Clearance, I decided I would try to write a tale where it was revealed that Dr. Glass, a minor character in it, was actually responsible for all the shit that happened to them in Hit The Road. When that didn't work, I decided to try a more… metafictional angle. Hopefully it's not too meta. Enjoy!
too meta? this is 98% meta, and wouldn't be easily understood by anyone who hasn't been on the site for long. Still, it was entertaining, and I like the idea of the Sandbox existing. A land of half-baked ideas and rotting self inserts.
Which, hopefully, are given out as food being completely baked and the rotten bits atleast shaved off.
Seems like literally every other new tale lately is some inside joke that only long-time site members understand :/
One of the criteria I use for voting is accessibility to a new reader. Usually, if a piece requires you to have read an asston of other, non-related articles on the site, I'm disinclined to stay away from the downvote button. More so if you also need to have kept up on site culture to really get anything, and even more so if the piece is specifically referencing current site events at the time.
The more articles that appear on this site that rely on poorly-aging commentary on whatever is going on at the wiki at the moment and references that require links to ten different articles to understand, the closer we get to being yet another fanwank watering hole.
…that's actually a very valid point. Hmm.
If this thing dips into the single digits by the time I get home, I'll probably take it down and see if I can revise it some to make it less of a "fanwank", as you so eloquently put it.
I lurked on this site a long time before I joined. Articles like the Sword of Damocles and the most terrible thing in the world were still on the main list and in the positives when I first started reading. I was doing a research paper on Baba Yaga for a mythology class and stumbled on the article Gears wrote. So I understand the desire to reference fun stuff from the past and the interesting in jokes that go along with that. I have to agree with Kalinin that it isn't really fair to the newer members to expect them to know what the hell a lot of these type of articles are talking about. When was the last time Dr. Glass was even in a tale? Unfinished business maybe? Which isn't exactly a spring chicken of a tale itself. It would probably be helpful if there were some footnotes that would lead people to some of the more obscure references made in tales like this.
All they do is sit on the beach in Rio and drink f██████ Mojitos!
Mojitos aren't available in Brazil, and definitely not in Rio. What they do have is stuff like Guaraná Antarctica, Coca-Cola/Pepsi, and Fanta Uva/Laranja.
Does Rio de Janero even have beaches?
The city of Rio de Janiero does, and plenty of them. The state of Rio de Janeiro also does, except for districts that are landlocked.
Just my two bits about Rio. Anyway, you got me when I visualized 682 leaning against that water fountain, clasping a plastic cup with his eldritch claws. +1
BTW, are you planning on revising this for accuracy or did you write this on purpose?
