Item #: SCP-2916
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-2916 materials are to be stored in Site-77's anomalous storage wing. Foundation agents embedded in the USPS and other delivery services are to be given regular instructions on how to recover SCP-2916, should they discover any, in their standard briefings and operational guidelines.
Affected subjects are to be issued Class-B to -A amnestics depending on how long they have been affected. Subjects proving resistant to amnestics may be held indefinitely within the Site-19 detention facilities for further study.
Description: SCP-2916 is an infohazardous anomalous phenomenon affecting adolescent humans. Subjects affected by SCP-2916 are most easily identifiable by the delusion that they have an uncle who works for the Nintendo of America corporation.
The vector for infection is unknown, however approximately 2,000 subjects affected by SCP-2916 have been identified since 1999. Over time, subjects develop false memories regarding the non-existent individual which can cause cognitive dissonance and emotional distress. Relatives and friends of the affected subject may also be affected, the likelihood of being affected appears to be related to the potential infected's willpower and willingness to give affected subjects the benefit of the doubt.
SCP-2916 subjects frequently experience reoccurring nightmares, in which they are awoken from their sleep and wander through their home before discovering their 'uncle' staring at an active CRT-style television. Descriptions of this individual have been inconsistent, although it has always described as being male, bald, and wearing highly reflective glasses.
After an unknown period of time after being affected, the subjects will begin to receive anomalously generated packages and letters through the United States Postal Service. Although delivery records show USPS employees delivering the mail, no specific employees have been identified. No delivery of SCP-2916 materials has been directly witnessed by Foundation personnel.
Some materials delivered to SCP-2916 include:
- A copy of the manual for the game "Duck Hunt", identical to a normal manual, with the 'Notes' section containing detailed, hand-written instructions on how the message's recipient could obtain a firearm from a relative to go hunting with.
- A photograph, badly deteriorated, showing a group of people sitting behind a bar, raising glasses. A hand-written note on the back read "Here with the folks at NINTENDO!"
- The Sega-manufactured light game gun "Justifier" with dried bloodstains on the handle; A note enclosed with the object insisted that it would work on a Nintendo console and to "ignore the smell!".
- A strategy guide for the game "Castlevania II: Simon's Quest" in a package also containing a bundle of white bandages that smelled of decomposition. Bandages contained only ashes.
During testing, a blank sheet of paper recovered with a subject affected by SCP-2916 was placed in water, and as a result previously unknown text was discovered. The content of the letter has been included in this documentation.
Dear Steve
So sorry I didn't write you sooner! I've just gotten home from another long session of working at Nintendo! You're turning out to be a fine young man. I was very pleased to see you write me. I'm sorry to hear about your setbacks at home. I saddened me when you wrote about having so many of your father's habits.
I think it's a great idea for you to visit me during vacation. You'll enjoy being with me, here at Nintendo. We can do so much with people like you, and I really think you'll like everyone here. They're dying to meet you, I've told them all about you.
Hope to see you soon and give your games my regards,
Uncle
