So, there's the Tech Hub Tag List, which is linked from the onsite Tag Guide. That page links to the Tech Hub Tag page, which I think is meant to be the Tech Team's personal guide. Then, there's the offsite Tag Guide, which is linked from the Tag Search. I think that one has some functionality crossover with the Tech Hub Tag page, but since it's linked to from the mainsite (while the latter isn't) I can't be sure. Also, given the Tech Hub Tag List, it seems almost entirely redundant. All three are either linked to from the mainsite, or from a page that is itself linked to, and contains instructions to read the other page. None of them seem to be designed to be read by users, despite the onsite pages telling users to read them.
For the sake of a) making it easier for users to correctly tag their own stuff, b) making it easier for the tag list to remain centralised, c) untangling some of this weird redundancy, and d) generally increasing user-involvement with the process, I think an onsite page (guide, most likely) containing an official list of tags and some of the details on the Tech Hub Tag page would generally lift the burden from staff. I think the team consists of around two people at this point? Doesn't seem manageable, in any place.
A warning saying something like "Do not tag your own articles unless you have read and fully understand this page" might deter users from tagging willy-nilly, and asking them to post in the discussion page/on an announcement thread would allow it to be more easily monitored. I feel like three offsite pages with redundant information and two onsite pages with almost no information massively complicates a process that could be way, way simpler. Users tag stuff wrong, I understand that, but even if the tech team don't want more user participation, I think it would be a good idea to better condense what we already have.
I'd be more than willing to compile and/or create an on-site page myself. I'm not staff, but I've done user-aid stuff before and I like to think I'm generally considered a cool dude semi-respected member of the community :P
